Jaw clenching (bruxism) is a common and often debilitating condition. It is characterised by involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth, typically caused by overactivity of the masseter muscles. It can occur during sleep or throughout the day, often without the person being aware of it.
Left unaddressed, chronic jaw clenching can cause a range of significant symptoms. Persistent headaches, facial pain, dental wear and jaw joint dysfunction are among the most common. Over time, the masseter muscles can also enlarge, contributing to a wider, squarer lower face.
